After claiming it's independence from Egypt, Kush returned to it's African roots. They no longer styled their artwork, clothing, and buildings after Egypt. They even spoke Meroitic (after Meroe).
Kush also continued female rule. A wife would rule over Meroe with her husband and sons.
One of the greatest kandakes (female ruler) was Queen Amanirenas. She defended Kush from the Romans in about 24 B.C.E. After 3 years of fighting, the Kushites and the Romans signed a peace treaty. Then Kush survived for about 400 more years, to be conquered by the African country of Ethiopia.
